Meta Quest: Tips for Setting Up

Last updated:
7/30/24

Hello! We’re excited to help you get your Meta Quest headset setup! The instructions below should take 20 minutes to complete (including update time). If you have any questions, please email support@helloworldcs.org or submit the Support Form.

Before opening your box:

  • Download the Meta Horizon app on your mobile device and set up your Meta account
    • The app icon looks like this:
  • You can connect your Meta account to your school email or any other email you've created—no Facebook account is required.
  • Your username can be anything you like: TeacherVR, SchoolMascot, ClassName, etc.
  • When it prompts you to add a new device, select “not now”
  • Make sure you have a login for the wifi you’d like to connect the headset to
  • You’ll need to have your phone and headset connected to the same wifi

Open your box:

  • If you have more than one headset, take the time now to label the headset and controllers (A, B, 1, 2, Ms. Ramon, Block A, anything that makes sense for you)
  • Locate the charger
  • Remove the lens covers and paper from the headset
  • Turn on your headset
  • Sit in a chair near a power outlet
  • Plug in your headset to charge
  • If your headset has enough power, follow the instructions to set up your headset.
    • You’ll wear the headset while connected to the charger

Following the instructions in the headset:

  • Pair your controllers
  • On this screen (of the headset), write down the 5 digit number. This is the ID number of the headset. You can use this to connect a new phone to the device later.
  • Use the right controller to follow the prompts on the headset
  • When connecting to wifi:
    • If asked for CA Certificate, choose “Do not validate”
    • Identity = username
    • Anonymous identity = ignore this
    • Password = enter your password
    • A hotspot is recommended for schools that have difficulty adding new devices to the network wifi.
  • You do not need to do anything while the safety video plays.
  • Use the right controller to select “Acknowledge” once the safety video is over.
  • Your headset will now need to update. Keep it connected to the charger. It will play a sound when it’s completed.

Once the update is complete:

Pair your headset with the Meta Quest app

  • Open your app on your phone
  • Pair with a new device - select Meta Quest 2
  • You do not need to have your Instagram account shared
  • You can skip the avatar creation
  • You can skip adding a credit card
  • Create a pin you’ll remember and write it down somewhere
  • Type in the code you see in the headset - it should be the same one you saw during the controller setup
    • If you skipped past the code, you can find it again by following: App library > settings > system > about. You will find the code near the middle of the screen under Pairing Code.
  • Your phone and headset will connect
    • Select ‘allow’ on your phone if it asks “meta quest would like to find and connect to devices on your local network”
    • You do not need to allow notifications
  • The headset will ask you to create a boundary
    • You do not need to share additional info if you don’t want to
  • Your headset is now set up!
    • To confirm your headset is ready to begin viewing projects, check out this video to ensure you have the home screen.
